Like a Boss

Jul 9, 2019

Today I’m talking about the lie that all female entrepreneurs tell themselves: “I need to do it all on my own!” Or “I should be able to do it all on my own.”

I can’t tell you how many times I hear this from other women. How many times have you said this lie to yourself? How many times have you wondered why you can’t figure this all out on your own?

We put so much pressure on ourselves to know everything there is to know about everything. This belief that we have to know everything keeps so many amazing and talented women from truly being successful in their business because they’re stuck.

Maybe you feel like you’ve exhausted all of your options and you’re not sure why your marketing isn’t working. You know you need help but you don’t think you deserve to get it. You won’t allow yourself to even consider how support could change your business. You keep spinning your wheels trying to figure things out on your own, but Google can only get you so far.

For the record: I’m not talking about getting free support. A free community is great, but it can’t be a substitute for paid, intentional support. If you don’t have paid support behind you, you’re going to be chasing what worked for someone else without really considering what can work for your business. The way you figure out what works for your business is by getting support from someone who is skilled in marketing and knows how to help you get clients.

Paid support can look like a lot of different things and it is up to you to decide what is right for you at this stage. It may be a membership site, a group program, a workshop or course, an in person conference, or a coach. There’s no right or wrong as long as it works for you.

As women, we’re used to taking care of everyone else. When it comes to our business we feel like we need to keep figuring things out or else we’re “weak”.

Time to hit the reset button and throw out the “should haves.” I don’t care if you’re used to doing everything yourself. Is it working in your business now? If not, it’s time to switch things up and adopt some new habits.

Here are 5 reasons why you cannot market your business and get clients all on your own:

1.     You’re emotional

Your business is your baby and you can’t see it objectively. You need someone to come in and help you look at your business in an objective way. You can’t be objective and be emotional. The emotion will always win.

This is your business that you are taking time to build and grow. You’ve poured your heart and soul into it and it feels vulnerable. Every time we lose a client, a client doesn’t sign on, or somebody doesn’t purchase, it feels personal. That kind of emotion makes it impossible for us to be clear-headed about our marketing.

2.     It takes a really long time to do things on your own

Time is money! Not to mention, it’s not a renewable resource. A lot of you are wasting so much time trying to figure things out that an expert could help you do in less time. Every day that you don’t get a client is costing you something. What is that cost?

I see women struggle for years before getting support. What could you do with the time you could save? How many more clients could you take on? How much faster would your business grow? What freedom would you have to spend time with your family?

3.     Our emotions lie to us

We have good days and bad days. We fluctuate on this pendulum of emotions. We need someone to support us on the bad days. We can self-sabotage if we don’t have the right council to help us overcome the lies that our emotions are telling us.

What happens if you start to believe the lies? If you don’t have a support system during the tough times, you’re going to find it very difficult, if not impossible, to come back from them.

4.     We love shiny objects

We go after any shiny object possible, and there are a ton of shiny objects online! The minute you go online you’re hit with messages of something else you think you need.

If we’re left to our own devices, we go after every shiny object. That’s when you don’t make progress. You keep stopping and starting. You feel like you’re doing #allthethings but you’re not actually getting anywhere.

5.     We don’t push ourselves hard enough

We don’t explore our full potential. We run whenever things get tough or resist stepping outside of our comfort zone. That’s why we need someone to push us when we feel like tapping out. If we’re doing everything on our own we’re not pushing ourselves to do enough of the right things.

Today, I’m challenging you to re-write the rules. Create your own rules. What is going to help your business move forward?
